About Passover

Passover (Hebrew: פֶּסַח, Pesach) is one of the most important Jewish holidays. It commemorates the biblical story of the Exodus, when the ancient Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt. The holiday begins on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan and lasts for seven days in Israel and eight days in the diaspora.

The centerpiece of Passover is the Seder, a ritual feast held on the first night (or first two nights outside Israel). During the Seder, families read from the Haggadah, a text that tells the story of the Exodus, and eat symbolic foods including matzah (unleavened bread), bitter herbs, and charoset. Throughout Passover, leavened bread (chametz) is forbidden.
