Question 1

What is Whatistheday?

Accepted Answer

Whatistheday is a free online tool that lets you find the weekday of any date — past, present, or future. It also converts dates across 10+ calendar systems including Hebrew, Islamic, Chinese, Julian, and more.

Question 2

Is this site free to use?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Whatistheday is completely free. All date calculations, calendar conversions, and tools are available without any registration or payment.

Question 3

How do I use the weekday calculator?

Accepted Answer

Simply enter any date on the homepage using the date picker (you can type year, month, and day), then click "GO TO" to see the full results page with the weekday, calendar conversions, and more.

Question 4

Can I look up dates in the past, like ancient history?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Whatistheday supports BC/AD dates. You can look up dates as far back as thousands of years using the BC toggle in the date picker. Internally, we use astronomical year numbering for precision.

Question 5

What do BC, AD, BCE, and CE mean?

Accepted Answer

BC (Before Christ) and BCE (Before Common Era) refer to years before year 1. AD (Anno Domini) and CE (Common Era) refer to years from year 1 onward. BC and BCE are interchangeable, as are AD and CE. On Whatistheday, select "BC (BCE)" in the Era dropdown to explore ancient dates like the founding of Rome (753 BC) or the construction of the Great Pyramid (c. 2560 BC).

Question 6

Which calendar systems are supported?

Accepted Answer

We support 10+ calendar systems: Gregorian, Hebrew (Jewish), Islamic (Hijri), Julian, Chinese, Persian (Solar Hijri), Buddhist, Coptic, Ethiopian, Hindu (Saka), and proleptic calendars for historical dates.

Question 7

How is the Hebrew calendar date calculated?

Accepted Answer

The Hebrew calendar is lunisolar with complex rules for month lengths and leap years. We use the established algorithms based on the Molad (mean lunar conjunction) and the rules of postponement (dehiyyot) to compute accurate Hebrew dates.

Question 8

How accurate are the Islamic (Hijri) calendar conversions?

Accepted Answer

Our Hijri conversions use the tabular Islamic calendar algorithm, which is a mathematical approximation. For religious observance (such as Ramadan start/end), actual dates depend on moon sighting in your locality — consult your local religious authority.

Question 9

What is the difference between Julian and Gregorian calendars?

Accepted Answer

The Julian calendar (introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC) has a leap year every 4 years. The Gregorian calendar (1582) refined this by skipping leap years in most century years. By the 20th century, the Julian calendar was 13 days behind the Gregorian.

Question 10

What does "proleptic" calendar mean?

Accepted Answer

A proleptic calendar extends a calendar system backward to dates before it was actually adopted. For example, the proleptic Gregorian calendar applies Gregorian rules to dates before 1582. This is useful for historical comparisons but doesn't reflect what people actually used at the time.

Question 11

How many countries are covered for holidays?

Accepted Answer

We currently cover public holidays for 52 countries across the Americas, Europe, Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. Each country page shows official public holidays with dates and descriptions.

Question 12

How are variable holiday dates calculated?

Accepted Answer

Variable holidays like Easter, Passover, and Ramadan are computed using established algorithms — the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm for Easter, the Gauss algorithm for Passover, and lunar calendar tables for Islamic holidays.

Question 13

Are the holiday dates always accurate?

Accepted Answer

Fixed holidays (like Christmas on Dec 25) are always accurate. Variable holidays use well-known algorithms that are accurate for most years. For religious observance, always verify with your local religious authority, as some holidays depend on actual moon sightings.

Question 14

How is the weekday calculated?

Accepted Answer

We use Zeller's congruence algorithm, which is a well-known mathematical formula for determining the day of the week for any date. It works for both past and future dates and is astronomically precise.

Question 15

What is astronomical year numbering?

Accepted Answer

Astronomical year numbering includes a year zero: 1 BC = year 0, 2 BC = year −1, and so on. This simplifies calculations across the BC/AD boundary. In our UI, we display the traditional BC/AD format, but internally use astronomical years for accuracy.

Question 16

Does the site use my location data?

Accepted Answer

We use your approximate location (via IP geolocation) only to show relevant local information like sunrise/sunset times and nearby holidays. No precise GPS data is collected. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Question 17

How accurate is the "Find What Day Any Date Falls On" calculator?

Accepted Answer

Our engine uses the Proleptic Gregorian Calendar for future and recent dates and the Julian Calendar for historical dates before 1582. This ensures 100% mathematical accuracy for any day of the week, from 4000 BC to the distant future.

Question 18

Does this tool support BC (Before Christ) or BCE dates?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Unlike standard calendars, our system is designed for historians and researchers. It fully supports BC/BCE date calculations, allowing you to find the exact weekday for ancient events like the founding of Rome or biblical milestones.

Question 19

Why do some dates show different weekdays on other websites?

Accepted Answer

Many calculators fail to account for the Gregorian Reform of 1582. Our tool automatically synchronizes between the Julian and Gregorian systems, providing the most historically accurate result based on the specific era.

Question 20

Which calendar systems are supported for conversion?

Accepted Answer

We support over 10+ major systems, including Gregorian, Hebrew, Islamic (Hijri), Julian, Chinese, and Maya. This allows users to cross-reference dates between different cultures and time periods seamlessly.

Question 21

Can I use this tool for business and leap year calculations?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. The tool includes built-in logic for leap year detection and allows for calculating business days, age, and time differences between two specific dates accurately.
