How the Hijri Calendar Works
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is a purely lunar calendar of 12 months and 354–355 days. Years are counted from the Hijra — the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. Because the lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, Hijri dates shift earlier each Gregorian year, which is why Ramadan moves through the seasons.
This page uses the tabular (arithmetic) Islamic calendar. Official dates in Saudi Arabia (Umm al-Qura), Turkey (Diyanet) and other countries are based on moon sighting or local astronomical criteria and may differ by ±1 day.
