About Earth Day
Earth Day is an annual event observed on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson after a massive 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The first Earth Day mobilized 20 million Americans and led directly to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.
