About International Workers' Day
International Workers' Day, also called May Day or Labour Day, is observed on May 1st in most countries around the world. The holiday originated from the labor movement of the 19th century, particularly the Haymarket Affair in Chicago in 1886, when workers struck for an eight-hour workday. In 1889, the Second International chose May 1st as an international workers' holiday.
