How the Hebrew (Jewish) Calendar Works
The Hebrew (Jewish) calendar is a lunisolar calendar: months follow the moon, while leap months keep the year aligned with the solar seasons. Years are counted from the traditional date of creation (Anno Mundi).
The Hebrew day begins at sunset, not midnight — so after sundown the Hebrew date is already the next day. Jewish holidays therefore start in the evening.
